Visiting artist, Lulu Zheng, opens show at BBAC

new year/new work: Francesc Burgos at WSG

New for 2012 at WSG Gallery is a show of recent clay work by Francesc Burgos. New Year/New Work is on exhibit through February 11, 2012, with a reception Friday, January 6.

Burgos comes from an architecture background, earning an MFA in ceramics from University of Utah after a career as a commercial and residential architect. That background in structure has a significant influence on the artist's thought process as he sketches and refines ideas for his pieces. The platter (above) has what looks like a little village or grid of sky-rises in its center.


Pay special attention to Burgos' surface treatment. He uses a technique called "terra sigilata" to build up a surface that somehow celebrates the essence of clay - the earthy quality. Yet the finish is somewhere between matte and glossy and seduces the viewer into touching it....yes, touching the piece of art. The piece above has raised bumps, at once sophisticated in design and reminiscent of an ancient tradition of ceramic work.

Burgos was inspired into pursuing the study of ceramics by an exhibit of medieval Japanese ceramics. "The simplicity of form" was what grabbed his attention and imagination.

Beyond Words: Book show opens Sept. 13

The semi-annual, much-awaited, hand-made book show will open to the public at WSG gallery at noon, Sept. 13, 2011. Barbara Brown, one of our book artists at the gallery - http://www.barbarabrownbooks.com/new_work_gallery/newWork.html - is the curator of the show. Each book show she puts together blows the definition of book out of the universe.

In the day of e-readers, books seem ever more precious. The object you can hold in your hand, that gives you information, holds ideas, stretches your mind, takes you on journeys - becomes all of those and a piece of art in this show.

Dee Ann Segula Retrospective continues through July 31, 2011

Dee Ann Segula's Retrospective continues at WSG through the month of July. Her show includes 1 painting saved from art school, 1 from before art school and many of her masterfully detailed pieces created along her journey since those days.

You'll see some of her exquisite redheads, like above, simultaneously telling and concealing stories. She has some wall-hung box pieces, some with pull-puppets as a part of them, needle felted work, knitted work and laquer-work paintings, to name a few of her techniques.

Word on the street is that John Cantu was in the other day, so look for his review in Ann Arbor. com!
